Chamber Music at the Scarab Club is excited to collaborate with the Marygrove College Department of Music in presenting this varied and inventive program. The Folias Duo, consisting of flutist Carmen Maret and guitarist Andrew Bergeron, will appear for the second time on a CMSC concert. This talented duo will perform a recent composition by Andrew Bergeron cleverly titled Folias Variations. It’s based on the beautiful La Folia theme, most famously heard in music by the Baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli.

The duo will then be joined by a string quartet to perform Astor Piazzolla’s Angel Suite, skillfully arranged for this combination of instruments by both Maret and Bergeron. Piazzolla wrote two pieces from this suite at the request of playwright Alberto Rodriguez Muñoz as incidental music for his play titled El Tango del Angel. The music is very much in the ‘new tango’ style that Piazzolla created and made famous, strongly rooted in the classic tango but also reflects elements of jazz and classical chamber music.

Austrian composer Erich Korngold was an incredible child prodigy. Most renowned for his film scores and operas, his Piano Quintet, Op. 15 was written when he was already a respected and seasoned composer, at the ripe age of 24! In three movements, the piano quintet is full of romantic intensity, expansive and heroic style as well as simple, straightforward melodies. This work is one that keeps listeners on the edges of their seats!
