Marygrove College Launches Summer Youth Entrepreneurship Program

youth_poster-page-001On Friday, July 3, Marygrove College will begin hosting a weekly Youth Entrepreneurship Program (Y.E.P. Detroit) designed to teach aspiring business owners between the ages of 6 and 14 about financial literacy, money management, and the essentials of becoming an entrepreneur. This is a five-week program that runs each Friday in July and costs $100.

Y.E.P. Detroit was designed and will be led by Sherika Cheney, M.Ed, in response to a still-sluggish job market, which is making it challenging for young people and recent college graduates to find financially-sustainable careers. “The Y.E.P. Detroit program is preemptive” said Cheney, “in that it teaches young people ages 6 to 14 how to develop, brand, and market their ideas, giving them access to transferrable skills that they will use in the university classroom and in the marketplace itself.”

Each Friday, grades 1-4 will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon; Grades 5-8 will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Detroit’s historic Marygrove College. Students will engage in hands-on lessons and activities designed to teach creative idea generation, book keeping, marketing and branding, as well as skills and strategies to help them develop a mission statement.

These classes are part of Marygrove’s Kids College Camps sponsored by the college’s Academic Success Center and Continuing Education departments.
