“We are so proud and pleased that Tim received this year’s SID of the Year award,” said Marygrove athletics director Steve Bloomfield. “His creativity and passion for our student-athletes and teams are instantly apparent in everything he does and Marygrove is fortunate to have him as a member of our team.”
Johnston received his Bachelor’s degree in sports management and marketing from Rochester College (Mich.) and earned a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Marygrove. It’s education Johnston put to good use to build a larger fan base for Marygrove’s 12 varsity sports through social media and local media outlets.
In a very tough Detroit market that features four professional sports teams along with coverage of four NCAA Division I programs, Johnston and crew were able to get Marygrove highlights featured on metro Detroit television stations as a result of introducing live video streaming for the first time in school history this year.
In addition to his SID and game day operations duties for Marygrove, Johnston sits on the WHAC’s ratings oversight committee for men’s basketball and serves on the conference’s Honors Task Force. Locally, he is a guest speaker for the Student Broadcast Foundation. Johnston is also active at the national level, participating in this year’s convention as a table topic presenter for NAIA-SIDA and a panelist at CoSIDA. This year, he will be a tri-chair of CoSIDA’s New Media Committee.
“It is an honor to be named this year’s Mike Dean WHAC SID of the Year,” said Johnston. “I would like to thank the great SIDs in the conference, Marygrove’s administration, and extend a huge thanks to Jeremy Otto and our outstanding student staff for helping to improve our overall presence.”
The award, named after longtime WHAC statistician Mike Dean, has been given to just four people. Dean (2007-08), Aaron Sagraves of Davenport, now at Cornerstone (2008-09), Madonna’s Patrick Moore (2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12), and Ryan Wronkowizc of Lourdes (2012-13, 2013-14).
