It’s that time of the year again. The Fall 2014 Marygrove College Chapter Induction Ceremony for The National Society of Leadership and Success was held on Friday, December 12, 2014 in the Library Lecture Hall at 6:00 pm. At this event attendees were able to meet the new inductees into full membership with The National Society of Leadership and Success. This ceremony marked the culmination of a period of hard work and personal growth, and we applaud their achievement!

The new inductees were:

To receive this award, you must complete an Orientation, a Leadership Training Day, 6 speaker broadcasts, 6 Success Networking Team meetings, and at least 5 hours of community service.

With family, friends, faculty, staff, and already inducted members in attendance it was truly a memorable evening. Those in attendance were able to celebrate as the inductees received their membership certificate.

– Yolanda Moore, Chapter Secretary

As part of the induction ceremony there were three speciality awards given out –

  • The Excellence in Service to Students Award which was given via a drawing to Yolanda Moore. This award is given to a non-faculty member on campus that exemplifies leadership and mentorship and has demonstrated commitment to bettering the lives of students.
  • The Excellence in Teaching Award which was given to Dr. Shameka Shelby. This award is given to an individual who teaches with passion and inspires students beyond the classroom, who demonstrates dedication to developing students beyond academic qualifications or someone who makes a positive difference in the lives of Society members.
  • Honorary Membership (Nomination for Non-Members Only) was also given to Dr. Shameka Shelby. This award is given to faculty, staff, or administrators who embody the mission of The National Society of Leadership and Success and demonstrate leadership qualities in a personal and professional capacity.

These amazing individuals join the ranks of the now over 280 members in Marygrove College’s chapter. This success is in part due to their leadership — the eBoard or Executive Board. With heartfelt thanks, Chapter Secretary Yolanda Moore wanted to thank Chapter President Robert D. Tompkins for his leadership in making sure the Society stayed active and on task.

This was an amazing group of individuals who pulled off an impossible task. At the end of each semester they hold induction ceremonies and provide a reception for the students and their families.  In the past three induction ceremonies , their guest speakers have been Dr. David Fike, Jane Hammang-Buhl and Jerry van Rossum.   This chapter recognized Jane Hammang-Buhl for her assistance in vetting and supporting the establishment of the Marygrove chapter as well as other faculty and staff who have helped in the development of the chapter and the students.

The National Society of Leadership and Success (Sigma Alpha Pi) is a relatively new organization — in that it was established in 2001 by a group of students. Since that time, it has grown into one of the largest honor societies in the USA. In Michigan alone, Sigma Alpha Pi has chapters in Saginaw Valley State, University of Michigan – Dearborn, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Northwood University and others.

The Marygrove Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) began a new chapter with their bi-annual recruiting activities at the beginning of this semester. All sophomore students with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA received a mailing explaining the merits of the society and an invitation to join.

Be on the lookout for more from this student organization in the future.
