November 20 is World Philosophy Day! World Philosophy Day is a global day of recognition of “the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual.”
The event was founded in 2005 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to UNESCO, philosophy is especially important for young people because it builds the sort of independent and critical thinking skills that are necessary to work on large scale social problems and to promote peace and justice. That makes philosophy a perfect fit for the tradition of Marygrove’s IHM founders and for the college’s urban leadership mission and vision.
This year the Marygrove Philosophy Department will join in the celebration, with a program to be held in Liberal Arts 241 at noon on November 20. The program will feature short, philosophically-themed videos and lively discussion. Light refreshments will be served.
The Marygrove Philosophy Department’s celebration of World Philosophy Day also serves as the informal kickoff for a substantial initiative to revitalize the philosophy program. The department’s efforts will include the implementation of new, innovative teaching ideas, new courses, and several new events. Watch this space! And Happy World Philosophy Day!
