Marygrove Feeds Midtown & More 2013 was a GREAT SUCCESS!!! Words cannot express how thankful we are for each and every one of you that participated in this event in some way- the donations, the labor, the support, everyone was AMAZING and Saturday would not have been the same without you. We were so blessed to have been given such perfect weather as well. Thank you for making a difference!

We truly embodied the Mission of Marygrove College!

  • We demonstrated COMPETENCE in identifying the areas most in need, procuring the necessary materials to get the job done, and working together as an effective team!
  • We displayed COMPASSION to every individual and family we met, engaged with the community, and reached out to put food in the hands of those who needed it the most!
  • We showed our COMMITMENT to service by unselfishly giving our time on the first beautiful Saturday of summer vacation. We achieved Marygrove’s Social Work Department’s motto “Be prepared to get involved”, as Marygrove Feeds Midtown & More became a community wide event this year! Thank you everyone for going above and beyond and giving Saturday your all, and most of all, for making a difference and helping those in need.

FministryThis project began as a Network. Marygrove College’s Social Work Student Organization formed a planning committee, quickly collaborating with Phi Alpha, Marygrove Men’s Empowerment Network (MMEN), and a number of individual students.  It quickly spread to the greater community outside of Marygrove and members from the National Society of Leadership joined us on Saturday as well.

What a wonderful success! Combining college student organization funds, volunteers, monetary donations, food donations, faculty and staff support, and the TIME AND SERVICE of an inspiring group of people, we were able to feed 400 people!!!

  • Special thanks to Progressive Plumbing Supply Co., Randy’s Sausage Detroit Cheese Co., Entenmanns’s, Macy’s Lakeshore Grill, Trader Joe’s, Freedom Road Transportation, and Meijer for the in-kind donations.

The Student Rec. Room was an exciting place to be the morning of Saturday April 27, 2013 as about 20 people gathered to pack lunches. We had several stations of activity and everyone took action right away and worked together notoriously to get the job done!  Before we knew it, the number in volunteers doubled as we were finishing packing and getting ready to distribute.  Our wonderful bus driver, Calvin, showed up right on time and we were on our way.

One group (including the Marygrove bus) happened upon an unexpected yet perfect match for their first stop; Fishermen’s Ministry who were set up right off of 3rd street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., providing clothing and McDonald’s gift cards, so Marygrove joined in and ended up serving about 250 lunches and water there.  Another group went to Cass Park, Clark Park, and the surrounding areas.  A few students even broke off into smaller groups to pass out lunches to the people in between the specific locations and at their church.  We then stopped over on the East side at Matrix Human Services to drop off and distribute some more lunches.  Then, we distributed the final 40 or so lunches at the final destinations: Operation Get Down, and COTS/ Cass Park.

Again, thanks to everyone who was involved: students, members of student organizations, donors & volunteers, faculty advisors, faculty, staff, and members of the greater community. This could not have happened without all of your help.

Thanks again and have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

Laura Wesley and Lauryn Pennington
