HorseHeadINDOOR TRACK: JACKSON EXCELS IN INDIANA
Sophomore sprinter George Jackson (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) nearly captured the 600-meter crown Saturday (Feb. 2) at the 2013 Wildcat Open hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. The speedy sophomore dashed his way to a 600m time of 1:24.08. The time, good for a third-place finish, marked a personal best for Jackson and was a mere two seconds off the championship pace.

MUSTANG SPORTS REPORT: Jan. 28, 2013

HorseHeadMEN’S BASKETBALL UPSETS NATIONALLY-RANKED #17 MADONNA UNIVERSITY
Sophomore forward Kevin Dunaj (Warren, Mich./Cousino) capped off a brilliant week by posting 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 3-for-4 from three point land to help lift the Mustangs (3-20, 3-12 WHAC) to one of the best wins in program history Saturday (Jan. 26). Dunaj added six rebounds, two blocks and a steal to help propel the 64-57 upset over NAIA No. 17 Madonna University (16-7, 11-4 WHAC). Earlier in the week, Dunaj recorded the first double-double of his career after notching an even 11 points and 11 rebounds in a 61-50 victory at Lawrence Tech. Continue reading

MUSTANG SPORTS REPORT: Jan. 22, 2013

HorseHeadCROCKETT COMPLETES RECORD DAY

On Friday (Jan. 18), cross country and track & field student-athlete Robert Crockett (Detroit, Mich./King) completed a record day in the 800m and one-mile events after finishing with times of 2:05 and 4:49 respectively. Both times were personal bests for Crockett as he dashed his way past National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II competition in each race.

MUSTANG SPORTS REPORT: Jan. 14, 2013

HorseHeadTRACK & FIELD IS BACK IN ACTION!
On Friday (Jan. 11), the men’s and women’s track & field teams took to the oval course for their first competition of 2013 at Saginaw Valley State University’s (SVSU) Doug Hansen Open. Over 10 Mustangs competed in Friday’s open-style meet that featured many top-7 finishes for a Mustang squad that is still very young. Of note, the Mustangs’ 4×400 relay team finished fourth overall against NCAA Division II competition at SVSU.

HorseHeadMEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS TO VIRGINIA THIS WEEK
Marygrove College Men’s Basketball will take their show on the road this week with a non-conference tilt at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. The contest will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 20) and will be the only competition of the week for the Mustangs. NAIA/USCAA/WHAC RELEASE FALL SPORTS ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

Marygrove College Athletics has been a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) for nearly the entire history of the athletic program. In 2007, the Mustangs joined a new association, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), to strengthen their athletic brand while offering student-athletes greater exposure. This season, our athletic teams joined the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) within the NAIA to once again increase the student-athlete experience. Continue reading

MUSTANG SPORTS REPORT: Dec. 3, 2012

HorseHeadKEARA MARKS REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
NAIA/WHAC/USCAA ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS TO BE RELEASED THIS WEEK

Women’s Basketball senior forward Keara Marks (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) became the third 1,000 point club member in the history of the women’s basketball program after netting 22 points in a road conference loss to Madonna. The 22-point outing was followed by an impressive 35-point effort in the team’s first game in Montana over the holiday break. The 35-point performance was a career-high for Marks as she attempts to become the program’s all-time leading scorer by season’s end. Marks is approximately 250 points shy of the record of 1,324 points set by former Mustang great, Amanda DeGain.

Marks was honored for reaching the milestone before a recent home game against Lawrence Tech. During the ceremony, the senior forward received a commemorative 1,000-point game ball with family at her side in front of the Mustangs’ home crowd at Ernest T. Ford Field House in Highland Park. WHAC HOME OPENERS SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY

The Mustangs new alignment in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) has allowed the athletic program to experience many firsts. On Wednesday (Nov. 28), the season of firsts continues as the men’s and women’s basketball teams prepare to host their inaugural home conference games against fellow WHAC newcomer, Lawrence Tech. THANK YOU TO ALL FALL SPORTS SENIORS!

Marygrove College Athletics has experienced significant growth throughout its 10-plus year history. In 2009, Marygrove added five sports to their ever-growing slate. The move to add five sports helped propel the athletics department into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and eventually the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). In 2009, many high school seniors and junior college transfers made the leap as they committed to programs in their infancy at Marygrove College. Continue reading
